Jammu and Kashmir bank was set up in the year 1938 while the bank became functional a year later in 1939. It is one of the important banks for the people of the state as it gives the financial aid to the people in the valley. It was set up under the letter patent issued by Maharaja of the state, Hari Singh. He invited the noted people and dignitaries to invest and become the shareholder. The bank was semi- government type where the capital was invested by the government and people under the government control. The tough time in the history of the bank came during the partition where it suffered major loss as two of its branches was left in the other parts of the line of control.
