About Syndicate Bank

Just as the country was wrestling against the British regime to gain the freedom, there were three gentlemen thinking something else i.e. to form a bank. It was due to their endeavours that Syndicate Bank, which you see today, was made a reality in 1925 in Udupi, the coastal part of Karnataka. And what’s interesting in the foundation of the bank is that their founders came from different fields altogether. Upendra Ananth Pai, a renowned businessman, a physician TMA Pai and an engineer Vaman Kudva were behind the formation of Canara Industrial and Banking Syndicate, the previous name of Syndicate Bank.

Few years down the line, the bank officials would not have dreamt that a small saving mobilization plan could become a rage and will still remain existent. It was way back in 1925 when that plan was launched by the bank. The agents were visiting the residence of customers to pick up the money from them. The collected money was getting deposited in the bank. This magnanimous scheme captured the imagination of the masses like a duck takes to water. The scheme, titled Pigmy Deposit Scheme, still allows the bank to get customer deposits of ₹ 2 crores on a daily basis, demonstrating the mega success of the scheme.

After 4 decades of operation as a private entity, the bank was nationalized in 1969. Since then, the bank has been achieving new growth levels and mastering the art of banking services. To improve the networking of the branches and ATMs, the bank has introduced Centralized Banking Solution (CBS), showcasing the increased focus of the bank to update its technology to stay ahead in an intensely competitive banking space.

The bank eyes on developing customized products to suit the taste of varied consumers. As a result, it has been able to move well in the areas of retail, corporate, international, SME and rural banking verticals. The bank has developed different products of both deposits and loans to tap into the needs of customers across these verticals.

As far as the bank’s network is concerned, it is impressive with the total number of branches and ATMs totaling to more than 3,000 in India. Be it the tier-I city to a less known town, the bank has spread its wings extensively in India’s geographical landscape. Also, the bank operates in London.
