UPI ID – Definition, How to Setup, How to Find

UPI IDs are unique codes that are different for each customer and are used to facilitate financial transactions between merchants and customers. A UPI ID offers a Virtual Payment Address for customers who can enter it while transferring money to different accounts. To create your UPI ID , you must download the UPI app of your choice, log in, and register yourself.

What is a UPI ID example?

UPI ID is a unique identification method for bank account holders in India. For example, pqrstu@ybl or 12345678@okicici.

Here, “pqrstu” can be your name, mobile number, email address and ‘@ybl and @okicici’ and the initials of your respective bank.

How to create a UPI ID?

Registering your mobile number or bank account with UPI-enabled apps such as PhonePe, Google Pay, Mobikwik, Paytm, etc., can be done by following the steps given below.

How to set a UPI ID in BHIM App?

Following are the steps you can follow to create a UPI ID in the BHIM app:

Step 1: Download the BHIM app or any other UPI -enabled app on your mobile device.

Step 2: After accepting the various prompts and choosing your preferred language, you will be sent a “Verify Mobile Number” request on your registered mobile number.

Step 3: After the verification is complete, you will be directed to choose your preferred bank name.

Step 4: Your details, including the bank name, account number, and IFSC code , will be automatically received by the application. If you have more than one account linked to the same mobile number, you can choose your preferred account to link to the app.

Step 5: Set a UPI ID and a 4-6 digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) to ensure that all the fund transfers occur securely.

Once you are done with all the steps mentioned above, you are all set to proceed with your UPI transactions. UPI has launched a “*99#” service with the aim of taking banking services to individuals from all parts of the country.

Registering through *99#

Banking customers can register on the UPI app by dialing *99#. Following are the steps to be followed:

Step 1: Dial “*99#” on your mobile device.

Step 2: Choose your preferred language when asked to.

Step 3: Enter your bank’s name or the first four digits of your IFSC.

Step 4: Enter your bank account

Step 5: Enter the expiry date of your debit card and the last six digits of your debit card number.

Step 6: Set your UPI Pin Step 7: Confirm your UPI Pin.

How to find your UPI ID?

In order to find your UPI ID , go to the UPI app on your mobile device and click on the three lines present in the top left corner. Choose “Profile”. Your UPI ID will be displayed on the screen.

Steps to Find the UPI ID in the BHIM App

Step 1: Go to the BHIM app and log in with your password.

Step 2: Select the “Profile” option from the drop-down menu that appears on the main screen. You will get your UPI ID along with your QR Code.

Find UPI ID in Google Pay

Step 1: Open Google Pay and tap on your picture on the top right.

Step 2: Tap on your Bank Account associated with your UPI ID.

Step 3: You will be able to find the UPI ID linked to your bank account.

How to change your UPI ID?

Select “ UPI ID ” under the “Settings” section. Then, you can enter your new UPI ID.

Change the UPI ID in the BHIM app

Step 1: Open the BHIM app on your mobile device. Tap on your profile.

Step 2: Select the “Settings” option.

Step 3: An option to edit your UPI ID will appear.

Step 4: After the necessary changes have been made to your ID, press “Confirm”.

Change UPI ID in Google Pay

Step1: Open the Google Pay app on your mobile device.

Step 2: Tap on your profile picture and then on the Payment Methods option.

Step 3: Tap on the bank account which is linked to the UPI ID you want to know.

Step 4: Press on the “+” icon next to the UPI ID.

How to use your UPI ID?

If you want to receive payments from others, you need to share your UPI ID or VPA with them. It is more convenient to share your UPI ID with them than to share your bank account number.

Whenever you wish to send money to someone, you must enter their mobile number or add their QR code from your mobile gallery in the recipient’s section. The funds will be transferred very quickly and in a hassle-free way.

Yes, UPI IDs are unique for each customer. This ensures that the funds are transferred to the UPI ID intended for, and there are minimum chances of the funds going into the wrong account. Depending on the bank your UPI ID is linked with, the last characters of your UPI ID also differ.

3. What are the details required for UPI?

In order to use the UPI platform, you must own a bank account with a bank that is a member of the UPI platform, which means that your bank should enable you to use the UPI facility. Moreover, your mobile number must also be linked to your bank account.

4. How can I recover the UPI PIN of my account?

To recover your UPI PIN, log in to the BHIM app and choose your Bank Account. After this, the bank accounts you have linked with your BHIM app will be displayed. You can then reset your UPI PIN.
