July 1, 2017, onwards, Goods and Services Tax (GST) has entered the taxation world on India.GST is the replacement of all indirect taxes like VAT, Service Tax, Entertainment Tax, etc. which will soon change the tax regime of the country. The GST tax rate has been divided into five slabs ranging from 0% to 28% and talking about the electronic items, the new GST rate ranges from 18%-28%.

Electronic items the sector has been segregated into two categories: one comprising products such as desktops and laptops, and the other covering items like monitors and printers. So, let us see what are the changes in the tax rate and how much more will you have to pay.

Now that GST has been implemented, laptops and desktops will attract a tax rate of 18% which was earlier 14-15%. Hence, if you have plans of buying a laptop or desktop in recent times, you should be ready to pay a little more now!

GST Impact on Monitors and Printers

With GST, monitors and projectors will attract a GST rate of 28% which was earlier up to 18.5%. So, your expense on these items has increased.

GST Impact on other IT accessories

GST rate on other IT accessories such as LAN and data cable will be 28% which was earlier 17.5%. Other than these items like photocopying, fax machines, ink cartridges are to levy 28% GST instead of 18% duty.

The government believes that all of these items like printers, projectors, and printers play an important role in ‘Digital India’ move and hence these changes will benefit in a longer run.
